AKA’s Fashionetta show a howling success
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Xi Kappa Omega Chapter, in partnership with their 501 c3, Students Securing and Achieving their Future through Education (S.S.A.F.E.) hosted their 2016 Fashionetta scholarship fundraising event on Sunday, June 5, 2016. The theme for this year’s event was Fashionetta, Unforgettable Pearls. The program featured eight beautiful girls who delighted the audience with a dance, fashion show, talent showcase and a formal waltz with their escorts.
The Fashionetta program has been raising funds for eligible Ventura County High School seniors of African descent since 1990. Participating girls raise funds for this program by doing such things as selling Fashionetta program tickets, selling souvenir book ads, seeking donations, selling dinners, holding yard sales and other creative means.
In exchange for these girls’ fundraising efforts, the ladies of Xi Kappa Omega Chapter, led by the Fashionetta Activities Chair Mitzi Ivey, took them on a four month long journey of enlightenment and fun! They experienced life enhancing activities that will be with them always! The girls went ice skating; served as voting ballot collectors during the AKA annual African American Speech Exposition; learned etiquette and social graces from the first African American Miss California (USA), Mrs. Toay Foster-Ortiz; learned table etiquette from Patricia Bass; had a 7-course meal featuring foods from around the world; visited the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles; saw the movie, The Jungle Book; Dr. LaSonya Davis, DNP, Assistant Professor of Nursing at California State University at Channel Islands (CSUCI) and member of Xi Kappa Omega Chapter, arranged for one of her nursing students, Iran Rahbar, to teach the girls Care and Hygiene, and had CSUCI twin students Kiana and Kiara Sailor, give the girls a wonderful tour of the campus and their dorm room.
A S.T.E.M. day was planned for the girls that incorporated activities that support science, technology, engineering and math. The activities included: egg carton math, making a solar oven and baking a pizza in it, building a marble run, learning computer coding, petri dish bacteria cultures, nucleation experiments with Coca Cola and Mentos candy, and making zip lock bag ice cream. The last event the girls had was a Mommy and Me Spa day in which they received manicures and pedicures from their moms or “Sub Moms”.
After the activities, the girls began rehearsals for the Fashionetta opening routine and waltz, both of which were choreographed by Latrece Seneca. The escorts for the girls were: Mr. Jaylen Jones for Little Miss Nylah Bert, Mr. Jayden Belle for Little Miss Shae Campbell, Mr. Camron Harris for Miss Kirstin Coleman, Mr. Ayden Jones for Little Miss Saige Johnson, Mr. Christian Williams for Miss Malia Mitchell, Mr. JaaZiah Spivey for Little Miss Zylah Spivey, and Mr. William Bradley, Jr. for Little Miss Kenadee Trotter.
