Apollo Theater Announces Annual Spring Gala Performers
As this year marks the 80th anniversary of the prestigious Apollo Theater, the iconic venue has decided to revamp its annual Spring Gala into a star-studded birthday party.
For the second consecutive year Emmy Award-winning and Grammy nominated entertainer Wayne Brady will helm hosting duties for the June 10 benefit, which will commemorate eight decades of the theater’s illustrious history of highlighting some of entertainment’s biggest and brightest stars.
In addition to honoring former Citigroup and Time Warner chairman, Richard D. Parsons, with the Leadership Award for his years of service to the Harlem landmark, the evening will also feature tribute performances from the likes of Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, and The Isley Brothers.
“Over the last 80 years, the Apollo Theater has been a constant in changing the face of popular music and culture here in Harlem and across the world,” CEO of The Apollo Theater, Jonelle Procope stated in a press release for the Gala. “Some of the world’s most legendary artists have not only graced this stage, but were nurtured and developed at the Apollo in the beginning of their careers.”
“Instead of honoring one or a few Legends, this year’s gala will pay homage to and spotlight the eight decades of music at the Apollo that changed entertainment forever.” Proceeds from the 80th anniversary bash will support the Apollo’s year-round performing arts programming, innovative education initiatives,
and community programs.
