Celtics, Clippers Resume Talks Involving Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, DeAndre Jordan
By Cindy Boren
Negotiations between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers on a blockbuster deal involving Coach Doc Rivers are back on again.
Talks are revolving around a deal that would send Rivers and Kevin Garnett to the Clippers for DeAndre Jordan and two first-round draft picks, according to multiple reports.
What’s behind the resumption of talks, which had broken off earlier? Mr. Chris Paul, that’s what. Sources told the Boston Globe that the team was acting on his wishes after earlier refusing to include two first-round picks. Paul wields considerable weight because he can become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and the Clippers do not want him to leave. Yahoo reports that Rivers would take the job in the belief that Paul would return.
The draft picks would be compensation to the Celtics for releasing Rivers from the remaining three years on his contract, which contains a non-compete clause. Yahoo reports that Rivers-for-picks would constitute one deal, with Jordan-for-KG a separate deal.
