Congresswoman Julia Brownley Hosts Holiday Open House

Congresswoman Julia Brownley presents a check for $7,250 to Hugh J. Ralston, President and CEO of Ventura County Community Foundation, for the Ventura County Veterans Fund.

On Thursday, December 17, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA-26)  hosted a holiday open house at her district office in Oxnard, where she welcomed constituents, gave a brief update of her first year in office and presented a check to the Ventura County Community Foundation – Veterans Fund (VCCF).

“It’s been a great honor and a privilege to represent the very best county in California. In my first year, I’ve been able to meet so many committed people. This is a very special place to live and to work. The amount of non-profit groups in Ventura County that are doing good things for people who need our help and assistance has been really remarkable to see on a daily basis,” said Rep. Brownley.

Rep. Brownley donated her salary from the government shutdown to VCCF in the amount of $7,250. “You all remember when we had a government shutdown. When that was going on, I knew that federal employees and everyone who was working for the government were not getting paid so I thought it was appropriate for me also not to receive a check. I decided from the time the government was shutdown that I would donate my salary to a non-profit here in Ventura County. I am giving up my salary to Ventura County Community Foundation — Veterans Fund. This is a remarkable organization on so many levels. I felt as though giving my money to this organization, to make sure that it’s distributed to assist and help our veterans in Ventura County, was very important.”

The Ventura County Veterans Fund, established on Veterans Day 2010, helps provide employment assistance, counseling, education and housing to veterans returning to Ventura County.

Hugh J. Ralston, President and CEO of VCCF, accepted the check from Rep. Brownley on behalf of the Veterans Fund. “I want to thank [Congresswoman Brownley] for this generous donation. We established this fund at [VCCF] and thanks to the support of Gold Coast Foundation, we wanted to create a vehicle for members in the community to support veterans, particularly veterans returning from service, and their families.”

Ralston continued, “This last summer we distributed our first $75,000 in grants and we are trying to raise another $100,000 to support those non-profits in our community that we know are doing a great job.”

The services the district office provides include: assistance working with a federal agency, directing veterans to services available to them, being an advocate for local city governments, and the county, at the federal level, directing interested parties to federal grants they may qualify for, and advocating for federal policies that will allow Ventura County’s unique and diverse economy to thrive.

Brownley was elected in 2012 to serve as the representative from California’s 26th district in the 113th Congress. Brownley serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee as the Ranking Member on the Health Subcommittee, and on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
