Filipinos Celebrate 117th Year of Independence
Filipinos around the world and in Oxnard, June 12th, holds a special meaning. On June 12, 1898, Filipino revolutionary forces, led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, publicly read the Act of the Declaration of Independence in Cavite El Viejo (now known as Kawit, Cavite) that proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippines from the colonial rule of Spain, following Spain’s defeat at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
The Filipino community in Oxnard celebration was held on Saturday, June 13, at the Performing Arts Center in Oxnard. The celebration included the unveiling of the National Flag of the Philippines and a performance of the “Marcha Filipina Magdalo,” which would later be known as “Lupang Hinirang,” the Filipino national anthem.
