A former bookkeeper for a group dealing with developmentally challenged individuals in Ventura County has been arrested and charged with stealing more than $400,000 from the organization.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office says that 47-year-old Lorena Varela is facing a number of forgery and grand theft charges in connection with the embezzlement of hundreds of thousands of dollars from ARC of Ventura County. Varela was arrested Tuesday and released from jail on bail. She is due back in court Tuesday to be arraigned.
The complaint against her alleges the thefts go back to 2004 and happened over a number of years while she worked as one of the bookkeepers for the organization. The alleged thefts were apparently not discovered until a recent audit.
