CI Model UN Team Wins Six Awards at Two Spring Conferences

The Model United Nations team at CSU Channel Islands (CI) recently garnered six top awards at two spring conferences.

Team members captured five awards in the Western Model United Nations, which drew 110 participants from six universities to Santa Barbara City College from March 28-30.  CI represented South Africa, Australia and Morocco.  Four students won the Distinguished Delegate Award in their individual committees:  Kristina Cervi, Carissa Collinge, Joey Gabrielson, and Steven Jordan.  Greg Amantia won an Honorable Mention.

The team also picked up an Outstanding Delegation Award at the Far West Model United Nations, held April 19-23 in Burlingame.  The event attracts teams from more than 15 universities all around the U.S. and Canada, and one school each from Asia and Africa.  CI’s Kuwait delegation, represented by Greg Amantia, Eric Case, Kristina Cervi, Joey Gabrielson, and Steven Jordan, won the award.

Led by faculty advisors Dr. Andrea Grove and Dr. Chris Scholl from the Political Science Program, CI’s 2013 Model UN team includes Greg Amantia, Yasmeen Ali, Eric Case, Kristina Cervi, Carissa Collinge, Keegan Doheny, Sofia Farid, Joey Gabrielson, Risa Head, Steven Jordan, Sebastian Navarro, Sara Sanders, Joe Sesto, and William White.

The team was formed in Spring 2008 and has competed successfully in three events each year since then: Northwest MUN in Seattle in the fall, West MUN in Santa Barbara in spring, and MUN of the Far West in the spring.  Participation in these events is funded by student Instructionally Related Activities funds and the Political Science Program.
