Congresswoman Lee Meets with Individuals Who Have Exhausted Their Unemployment Benefits
Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) met individuals who have exhausted their Unemployment Insurance benefits during a tour of The Unity Council’s Multicultural One-Stop Career Center. This tour was held on Friday, January 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at The Unity Council located at 1900 Fruitvale Avenue, Suite 2A, Oakland CA.
According to the California Employment Development Department, an estimated 213,793 people in California and 8,064 people in Alameda County lost their benefits due to the expiration of the emergency unemployment compensation program on December 28, 2013.
Congresswoman Lee has consistently advocated on behalf of the long-term unemployed, most recently co-authoring a letter to House speaker John Boehner urging him to address the looming expiration of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans.
The Unity Council, Celebrating 50 years of service to the community, provides comprehensive workforce development services that specialize in serving job-seekers through the Multicultural One-Stop Career Center. The One Stop Career Center, offers case management, classes, financial education and coaching, and other job training services in seven languages to approximately 1,900 job seekers each year. Clients that receive these services are more likely to achieve economic stability.
