Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sponsors Golf Tournament
The Ventura County Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., (KAP) is sponsoring their Diamond Open Golf Tournament at the Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore on Saturday, May 25.
The event is intended as a fundraiser to help support KAP’s scholarship awards as well as key educational activities such as the Guide Right Program, which provides young people with educational seminars and workshops, field trips, and opportunities for mentoring.
KAP also awards annual grants like the Robert L. Sanford Criminal Justice Scholarship, which is given to a promising young applicant who is interested in the field of criminal justice.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was founded in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University. The fraternity is significant because it is the first and only Greek letter organization with its initial chapter on a white university campus.
The Ventura County Chapter began with a chance meeting in 1968 between KAP members Milton Harrion and George Sims in Oxnard. In 1977 after years of research and planning, Harrion and Sims found enough local members of KAP to create their own chapter. It was the first black Greek organization in Ventura County.
The Diamond Open Golf Tournament has been ongoing since 1978. Sims, this year’s tournament chair, described how it all started. “We needed to raise some money because we wanted to give out scholarships,” he said. “I had some friends who always talked about golf and they mentioned to me about having a golf tournament.”
Sims was initially skeptical about the idea. “We didn’t think there would be enough guys for a tournament, but that’s how we started. We made a whopping $300.”
He described how things have changed since then. “Last year the tournament enabled us to give two $1,000 scholarships,” he said. “This year we will be able to do the same, and hopefully we’ll be able to increase that amount in the future.”
KAP scholarships are usually given to young people during their senior awards night. Sims emphasized that KAP scholarships are open to all young people regardless of ethnicity or gender. He especially wants young ladies to know that even though KAP is a men’s fraternity, women are eligible for their scholarships. As he explained, “We give these awards based strictly on need, academics, and community involvement.”
Sponsors for this year’s golf tournament include the William S Dunlevy Law Offices, Sanford Insurance Agency, and the Tri County Sentry.
Entry fees are $110 per person. The tournament format is a Texas Scramble and will include a tri-tip lunch and prizes for the winners.
Reservations can be made by mailing a check made payable to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity – Ventura Alumni Chapter. The mailing address is P.O. Box 6972, Oxnard, CA 93033. The reservation deadline is May 16.
