Kappas Adopt a Highway

By Gary L. Harbour

The Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has adopted a section of Highway 126 in Ventura, California. Herb Smith, one of the Ventura Chapter founders came up with the idea in themid-seventies to let commuters know that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was in the area. Within the last few years the idea was revisited. The task to make this happen was taken on by current Vice Polemarch Maurice Williams. After a few years of administrative requirements and planning, Williams was able to obtain a section of Hwy 126 in Ventura in the name of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Ventura Alumni Chapter. It is clearly marked, just east (or south) of the northbound side of the highway approaching Victoria Avenue in Ventura. Williams is the official trainer for the Chapter and makes sure that all volunteers are safe and properly equipped for the task of keeping the section up to par.
