Kappa’s Diamond Open Golf Tournament is a Huge Success!!
By Gary LeRoy Harbour
Saturday, May 25, 2013, the Ventura County Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., held their annual Diamond Open Golf Tournament. The event served as a scholarship fundraiser for high school students from the tri-county areas that are in desperate need for financial assistance for college. A Ventura County tradition, the Diamond Open has been a premier Kappa fundraiser for over 20 years. This year’s tournament was at the breathtakingly scenic Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore. The beauty of the golf course is only rivaled by the most delicious tri-tip BBQ west of Texas, which was included in the entry fee. The registration tables were very busy with an enormous turnout of golfers from all over Californias.
Supporters of this year’s event included the Tri County Sentry Newspaper who helped advertise and sponsor the event. Area businesses were able to become hole sponsors, with proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Other supporters included golfers from USC, Moorpark Country Club, Haas Automation, Amgen, Omega Psi Phi VAC, Pro Duffers and local churches. Golfers from the Los Angeles County Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and other chapters from California lended their support.
The Diamond Open golfers played 18 holes of golf. They created their own foursomes in a Texas Scramble format and included men and women flights. They had a wonderful time golfing, winning prizes for longest drive, closest to the hole and other team competitions. Then, as the golfers enjoyed BBQ tri tip and links, the scholarship raffle was held. The prizes included a Nikon COOLPIX digital camera, a Toshiba laptop and a 42” Panasonic HD flat screen television. The fun didn’t stop there. There were many more raffles, with prizes ranging from golf club bags and clubs to fine spirits and gift certificates, to exclusive shopping destinations around California.
The wonderful thing about this event was that it was multicultural in perspective, with an international flavor. Much of the conversation focused on the need for scholarships for our youth. During a discussion of how the funds were being used, Scholarship Committee Chairperson George Sims shared the Kappa Alpha Psi track record for giving yearly scholarships, the amount awarded in recent years and immediate plans for the future.
Members of Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity that were on hand during the tournament were Polemarch Milton Harrion, Vice-Polemarch Maurice Wilson, Scholarship Chairman George Sims, Gary Harbour, Herb Smith, Ted Bagley, Marcus Bagley, George Elzie, Walter Henry, Bobby Adams and Kendall Simmonds. All of these men worked very hard to make this year’s Diamond Open a huge success.
