La Colonia Community Walk Celebrates Efforts to Improve Health and Fitness
On Saturday, September 14, Ventura County Public Health (VCPH), working collaboratively with the City of Oxnard and the Oxnard Police Department, will host the 5th Annual La Colonia Community Walk. The free event is an annual celebration of the community’s efforts to improve the health, fitness levels and overall wellness of its residents.
The event will begin with 8 a.m. registration at the La Colonia Youth Park Center, 197 N. Marquita St., Oxnard. At 9 a.m., VCPH fitness instructors will lead participants in “Health and Soul” Line Dancing and a Zumba battle and then, at 9 a.m., hundreds of Oxnard residents will take to the streets of the La Colonia area for the 5K community walk.
The walking route will wind through La Colonia area neighborhoods and finish at Oxnard’s Del Sol Park, 1500 E. Colonia Road, where a community resource fair will take place through 1:30 p.m. The resource fair will include healthy recipe taste-testing, gardening workshops, free health screenings, and more.
Over the past five years, VCPH, the Oxnard Police Department, the City of Oxnard and the Oxnard City Council have worked closely with community leaders to provide La Colonia residents with an array of programs and services designed to improve their fitness, nutrition and public safety levels.
In early 2010, the Oxnard City Council supported a proposal to use an unoccupied parcel of land at the end of Camino del Sol Road for a community garden. Today, the La Colonia Camino del Sol Community Garden is celebrating its second anniversary and boasts more than 50 local residents who grow and share homegrown healthy produce. Camino del Sol Community Garden volunteers will host gardening demonstrations and a free plant give-away at the resource fair.
