Law Easing Racial Profiling Suits Sued By Police Union

National NYPD 300x125 Law Easing Racial Profiling Suits Sued By Police UnionNew York City’s biggest police union is asking a court to nix a law that would make it easier for people to bring racial profiling claims or other discrimination lawsuits.

The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association sued the City Council Tuesday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg filed his own lawsuit against the same law last month.

Like Bloomberg, the PBA says the measure impinges on state criminal law. The union also says the law is too vague and “leaves police officers to guess” how to do their jobs.

The City Council had no immediate response. Council Speaker Christine Quinn has previously defended members’ authority to pass the law, though she opposed it herself.

The council passed the law in August over Bloomberg’s veto.
