The Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., along with Alumni and Undergraduate Chapters from across the United States and from other countries around the world, recently celebrated the 103rd anniversary of the founding of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. On January 5th 1911, ten esteemed men founded the fraternity on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, to unite African American men who were facing the challenges of racism at that time. For Kappa men, around the world, ‘Founders Day’ is a salute to those ten courageous men of honor and vision. From its inception, all members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., have been encouraged toward personal achievement and service to mankind.

The Ventura Alumni Chapter works tirelessly to be in service to the community of Oxnard as well as other surrounding communities. A few highlights of the Ventura chapter’s contributions include its College scholarships to deserving High School graduates, its highway maintenance through the Adopt A Highway program, youth guidance and leadership program and support of the Food Share organization.

The Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi chartered April 30, 1977. In 1959 at Jackson State University, George Sims was initiated into the Delta Delta Chapter. In the same month, Brother Sims went to Tougaloo College, Gamma Rho Chapter, to aid in the initiation of Milton Harrion. Nine years later in 1968, in Oxnard, California while looking for a barber shop, Brothers Harrion and Sims met once again. Brother Harrion was just recently released from the service. They discussed old times and spoke of other Kappa’s in the Ventura area. This meeting of the two Brothers inspired them and the dream to charter. A local chapter was born.
