Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Continue Long Tradition of College Scholarship Awards
By Maurice Williams, Vice Polemarch and Gary Harbour, Historian, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Ventura Alumni Chapter
Since 1977, the men of the Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., have made generous scholarship awards available to students from Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Annually, scholarships are awarded to students based on merit with additional consideration for need, participation in school programs and community service. For scholarship consideration, students must complete an application and have been accepted for admission to a four year college. Scholarship application information is made available each year to all local high schools and while all students are encouraged to apply, there is a focus on young African American men.
This year two scholarships were awarded. The recipients were Jordan Degraffinreid of Buellton, CA, who will be attending Colorado School of Mines this Fall. In a letter of appreciation, Jordan’s mother, also a member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc., wrote:
“I cannot tell you how much it meant to us to have the men of Kappa Alpha Psi come to honor Jordan tonight. What an outstanding presence. There is a new pep in his walk and his talk. You will be hearing from Jordan very soon. Once again, THANK YOU! Blessings, Rosalyn Lambert — Proud Mother of Jordan Degraffinreid”
In a follow up letter, Jordan wrote:
“Thank you for awarding me your 2013 Achievement Scholarship. It is a big financial help especially in an economic time like this. It was also a very special moment to have the men of your fraternity take the time to come to my high school’s senior awards ceremony. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The support of this is very much obliged and will always be etched in my memory. You are truly the “Village” that my parents remind me of when they say it takes a village to raise a child.
As I approach graduation on June 6, 2013, I’m excited about the new phase of my life in college. I am so excited to have been one of the 39 freshman selected to participate in Colorado School of Mines Multicultural Engineering Program’s Challenge Summer Session for four weeks which starts in July. I will get a head start on chemistry and calculus with my fall professors.
Again, I thank you for your support which helps to make college a reality. I will continue to push myself and work diligently on my academics.”
The second recipient was Reginald Dixon of Oxnard, CA. Reginald will be attending San Diego State University. He is a Rio Mesa High School graduate. Reginald received scholarship awards from representatives of Kappa Alpha Psi and other Greek and community service organizations. Other presenters included but were not limited to: 20th Century Onyx Club, Inc., Pro Duffers West Golf Club, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., The Links, Inc., and many others, who gave tens of thousands of dollars to local deserving students.
To support these annual scholarship efforts, the Ventura Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., holds various fundraising activities throughout the year with their annual Diamond Open Golf outing as their primary initiative. This year’s fundraiser included a scholarship raffle which raised thousands of dollars. The third place winner was the Santa Barbara Foundation, who donated a Nikon Coolpix digital camera to scholarship recipient J. Degraffinreid. The second prize winner was D. Ziegler who won a Toshiba Notebook. The first prize winner was R. Johnson who won a 42 inch Panasonic HD flat screen television.
