District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced that Pablo Cesar Tellez-Chavez, of Port Hueneme, was sentenced by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Roger Lund to 365 days jail and 36 months formal probation for vehicular manslaughter, a violation of Penal Code section 192( c )(2), and driving without a license, a violation of Vehicle Code section 12500(a). The vehicular manslaughter led to the death of Daniel Martinez Meza.
On October 21, 2013, at approximately 7:50 a.m., the defendant was driving northbound on the Rose Avenue overpass in Oxnard. The victim was riding his bicycle within the bicycle lane, which separates the number two lane and the on-ramp. The defendant rapidly changed lanes from the number one lane to the on-ramp lane, striking the rear wheel of Mr. Meza’s bicycle and throwing Mr. Meza off his bicycle. Mr. Meza was pronounced dead at the scene.
The defendant is unlicensed and has three prior convictions for driving without a license and two prior convictions for driving on a suspended license.
