Pro Duffers West Golf Club 29th Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fund Raiser
On Saturday, September 14, 2013 the Pro Duffers West Golf Club held its 29th Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fund Raiser. This event was held at the River Ridge Golf Club – Vineyard Course, in Oxnard. It was a Western States Golf Association sanctioned event. 45 players participated in this shotgun format tournament.
Participants competed for awards in several different categories, sweepstakes and various prizes including: Men Championship, A, B, C & D Flights; Women Championship, A & B Flights; Guest Flight; Closest-to-the-Pin, Skins, Putting Contest, Longest Drive; other sweepstakes prizes; 50-50 Drawing; and, Hole-In-One Prizes – $5,000, Airline Tickets, Set of Golf Clubs, Electronic Package, and his/her watches. After play, the golfers and their guests were treated to a banquet and participated in a lively raffle and auction. Part of the auction included selected artwork that was on display, courtesy of Emmy Lu, owner of Emmy Lu Galleries Beverly Hills. A portion of the proceeds from the art auction was donated to the Pro Duffers West Scholarship Fund.
Charles Vivian, Pro Duffers West Tournament Chair & Membership Chairman, directed this event with assistance from the other officers; Dwight Blackledge, President, Ron Biddell, Vice President; Don Cobb, First Tee Program Site Manager; David Finley, Handicap Chairman; Patrick McCoy, Secretary; and, Everette Garmon, Treasurer. Pro Duffers West Golf Club was formally established in March of 1983 by 13 avid African American golfers. Its first tournament was held on June 25, 1983. Through the years, the club has grown in membership. Four charter members remain active and they are as follows: Bobby Adams, Jerry Gaston, Milton Harrion and Sterling Ivery.
The proceeds from this tournament and other Club sponsored events help fund the Pro Duffers West annual scholarship awards. The Club also is active in the First Tee Junior Golf Training Program which is a national initiative of the World Golf Foundation. First Tee Site Manager, Don Cobb states, “The local program offers Life Skills, golf mechanics, rules and etiquette training along with Junior Golf equipment with golf course and practice range access provided by American Golf”. The program is run out of the Saticoy Country Club. The Saticoy site was established in March 2000 and has trained over 280 junior golfers over the past 12+ years. The First Tee junior golfers are required to espouse the nine core values of the program, which are: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment.
