SBOE Chairman Horton Hosts Free Small Business Seminar in Oxnard
The Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center was the site for the free Oxnard Small Business Seminar, hosted by co-partners Jerome E. Horton, Chair of the California Board of Equalization (BOE), Board Member George Runner, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, Assemblyman Jeff Gorell, Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn, Oxnard Harbor District President Jason Hodge, the City of Oxnard, and the Oxnard and California Chambers of Commerce, conducted on July 30, 2013.
Over 150 entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses, and learn more about complying with state and federal tax laws, had their questions answered by experts from the Board of Equalization, the Employment Development Department, the Franchise Tax Board, the Internal Revenue Service, the Small Business Administration, and the Small Business Development Center.
“I was very impressed with the crowd of entrepreneurs and small business owners from the vibrant community of Oxnard who came out to learn how to grow and develop their businesses,” said Chairman Horton. “California’s economy is growing and the community of Oxnard is definitely contributing to that recovery.”
With numerous networking opportunities, as well as a broad range of resources for business owners, seminar attendees were pleased with the seminar elements.
“I think this is an awesome opportunity for people who want to start a business to connect with government agencies,” said healthcare professional, Mike Couchman.
Elliot Ross, owner of Agoura Hills-based Varna Electronics, Inc., added, “It is very good to keep up with recent changes and network.” Meanwhile, Valarie, representing a construction material supply company in the Oxnard area, said, “It was 100 percent important for me to be here. I came with an issue and I am walking away with a resolution.”
“It is important that elected officials collaborate with local chambers and other business organizations to provide business growth information for small business owners,” Horton concluded. “I thank Senator Runner, Senator Jackson, Assemblyman Gorell, Mayor Flynn, and Mr. Hodge for making the Oxnard event a successful one.”
