The California African American Museum Celebrates Black Music Month

In honor of Black Music Month, the California African American Museum (CAAM) presented Target Sundays at CAAM: Jazz in June, Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. CAAM’s outdoor courtyard was filled with the regal sounds of Jazz, R&B and Gospel thanks to the talented group of musicians that have been assembled for the program.  Co-hosted by 70s sensation, singer Freda Payne and actor Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter, the event was free and open to the public.

Ryan Cross and his band headlined the show for the second year in a row.  Over the course of Cross’ distinguished career, he has worked alongside such notable musical artists as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Macy Gray, John Legend, Alicia Keys and Rihanna.  He has also served as a music consultant for top-rated television shows, including American Idol, Friends ,The West Wing, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Along Came Polly, among many others. Cross is also a frequent performer at major Los Angeles hotels and venues including The Biltmore Hotel and Hotel Angeleno’s West Lounge, where the world’s leading jazz musicians and vocalists sit in with his band.

Other event featured performers included: vocalist C.J Emmons, Broadway star Crystal Starr-Knighton, recording artist Oya Thomas and the past music director for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Kenneth Crouch.  Other event activities included a free art workshop for all ages, guided by local educator and artist Teresa Tolliver.
