Lawrence Lee and Buddy Gibson Collections Showcased at Tomas Cafe
On Saturday, October 26, 2013, the Lawrence Lee (H.E.R.E.O.S.) and Buddy Gibson Collections were showcased at Tomas Café located at 622 South “A” Street. The exhibit featured African-American figuring heroes and model airplanes.
H.E.R.O.E.S. is an acronym for “Honoring Excellence Regardless of Ethnic Stigmas” and it was formed in 1999 for the purpose of increasing public awareness and perception about those in the military who have furthered the advancement of their ethnic, racial, or gender groups through their acts of heroism, patriotism and extreme courage above and beyond the call of duty.
What made the contributions even more amazing was the fact that many of them were willing to fight for and defend a nation that at times was reluctant to acknowledge or accept their right of equality. Through it all, they persevered under extreme racism and sexual discrimination to eventually pave the way for dramatic changes to achieve equality in the military services.
