Man sentenced for DUI crash that injured two children
Ventura, CA – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Sonny Curtis Ramos (DOB 10/20/79), of Oxnard, was sentenced to 8 years 4 months in state prison for driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily injury to two children, one who was under the age of five, and causing injury to a third child.
At approximately 4:15 p.m. on November 7, 2016, Ramos drove his Chevrolet Silverado at speeds estimated to be between 60 to 80 mph on a residential street in Oxnard when he failed to stop at a T-intersection. He then drove through the exterior wall of the victims’ residence, striking the three children who were inside. The collision trapped a 2-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy between a wall of the residence and Ramos’ vehicle. The 2-year-old suffered broken bones that required surgery, had bleeding in her brain, and had to wear a body cast for seven weeks due to her injuries. The 8-year-old was hospitalized for a month, having suffered a collapsed lung, broken bones that required surgery, and bleeding on his brain. The 15-year-old also suffered lacerations and abrasions to her arms and legs.
At the time of the offense, Ramos’ blood alcohol content was 0.17 percent. His driver’s license was also suspended from a prior driving-under-the-influence conviction. In addition to the state prison sentence of 8 years, 4 months, Ramos was ordered to pay restitution to the victims and his driver’s license was again suspended.
