The City of Oxnard spices up the summer season with the 21st Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival held in downtown Oxnard on July 26-27, 2014.  The annual celebration takes place at Plaza Park, Fifth and ‘B’ Streets from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days and celebrates everything salsa….the food, the music and the dance!

The festival kicks off with a special Friday Night Concert, July 25 at Plaza Park featuring The Oxnard Salsa Orchestra, ‘OSO”.   OSO is led by Oxnard born and raised, veteran percussionist Raul Rico Jr.,  Musician, producer, radio programmer and bandleader, Rico has been involved in various aspects of Latin music for over 40 years.   The concert runs from 7 to 9 p.m.  Admission is $10 per person for concert seating. Tables for six are available for $85.

The musical entertainment runs continuously throughout Salsa Festival weekend featuring fiery and electric bands that are sure to move visitors to their feet!  The main stage band line up is as follows:

OPA OPA (a name derived from the Greek language meaning ‘Hello, Welcome, Hola!), fires up the celebration on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   The Los Angeles based band was formed in 1987 by Oswaldo Bernard and his good friend and fellow musician, Anthony Apollo.  The two men set out to combine their musical talent to create a band with distinctive sound with rich percussive rhythms, remarkably unique vocals and robust brassy horns that makes up the powerful sounds of OPA.

The music continues with the internationally renowned Sabor Latino Orchestra playing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Performing their own original music, the 17-piece orchestra provides the best in traditional Latin music and ranks among the most accomplished performers of the golden era of the Mambo Kings, New York Salsa and Afro-Cuban music.

Closing out Saturday is Yari Morè Band playing from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.  This exciting band has been providing live entertainment in major cities throughout southern California, Las Vegas, Chicago and Edmonton, Canada for over 20 years.

Sunday’s celebration kicks off with Conjunto Afro Son playing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Led by Bobby Escoto III, this group of seasoned musicians from different parts of north, central & South America living in Los Angeles, bring great music and energy to the stage.

Festival goers can enjoy the sizzling salsa sounds of Orquesta Tabaco y Ron, a southern California favorite who perform 2 pm to 4 pm. This 10-piece group is led by producer and pianist Hector Manuel Rivera and lead vocalist Martin Padilla.

Closing out Sunday is the granddaughter of the late great Tito Puente, Janeen Puente and her high-energy salsa orchestra performing from 4:45 pm to 6:45 pm. The Janeen Puente Orchestra brings some of the finest musicians on the West Coast together showcasing original songs and arrangements with Puente’s distinctive voice.

The 21st Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival is presented by the Oxnard Downtowners, and sponsored by Gold Coast Broadcasting, Bud Light, Mission Foods, Shock Top, Ventura County Star, and many other generous community partners.

The two-day event draws an estimated 50,000 salsa lovers to the City of Oxnard for an action packed weekend. In addition to musical entertainment, other event highlights include the Salsa Tasting Tent, an eclectic vendor marketplace, international foods, kids korner, a salsa recipe contest, cooking demonstrations and the popular, ‘Dancing with out Community Stars’ dance contest & charity fundraiser.

For those wishing to travel by train, the Oxnard Amtrak Station is just three short blocks from the festival site.  Amtrak Pacific Surfliner offers ‘Kids Ride Half Price’ and seniors get 15% off fare.  Festival admission and parking are free.  No coolers or pets are permitted on Festival grounds.
