Pepperdine University Presents “The Colors of Our History”

The Pepperdine University Black Alumni Council (BAC) will host The Colors of Our History: How Art and Words Inspire on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at the Four Points By Sheraton (5990 Green Valley Circle, Culver City, CA) from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Sponsored by the BAC and the California Bank and Trust, the Black History month celebration will highlight African American’s influence in art.  Details are available at the event websitehttp://bitly.com/ColorsEvent.

The keynote speaker is award winning artist and author Synthia Saint James.  Celebrating 45 years as a professional artist, Saint James has received numerous accolades for her work, including a doctorate from Saint Augustine’s College, WYCA Silver Achievement Award, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for the children’s book Neeny Coming, Neeny Going, and was the first painter to receive a Trumpet Award.  Saint James is best known, however, for creating the original cover art for the hardcover edition of Terry McMillan’s book Waiting to Exhale and designing the first Kwanzaa Stamp for the United States Postal Service, for which she received a History Makers Award.

Other featured artists include Pepperdine University student and spoken word artist Demi McCoy and jazz musician Princeton Parker.  Both McCoy and Saint James will display their art and offer select pieces for sale.  Saint James will donate 40 percent of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork, ranging from $100-$850, to the BAC Scholarship Fund.

“As we celebrate Black History month, we take pride in the accomplishments that African Americans have made in art and history,” said BAC Chairman Charles Franklin.  “At the BAC our goal is to raise scholarship funds for African American students at Pepperdine University to provide assistance to current and future students.”

Pepperdine professors Drs. Joi and Raymond Carr will serve as masters of ceremony to guide us through an inspirational journey.  Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

Registration is required.  Individual tickets are $25.00 for Pepperdine alumni and guests and $15.00 for students with valid student identification; parking is $6.00 with validation.  A portion of the ticket purchase is tax deductible.  All net proceeds will go towards the scholarship endowment fund to educate African American students at Pepperdine University.  For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit the website at http://bitly.com/ColorsEvent.
