Psi Xi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosts 17th Annual Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament
The Psi Xi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., held its 17th Annual Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament on July 26, 2014. It was held at the River Ridge Golf Course. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1911, promotes “Scholarship” in accordance with one of its Cardinal Principles. Psi Xi Chapter in Ventura County awards scholarships to local area students to help towards their college expenses. These students must meet the qualifying criteria. This has been a highly successful event over the years due to support from individuals and businesses in the local community through their participation and sponsorship.
The golf play was a best ball format where each team member hits their tee shot and then the best ball position of the tee shots is chosen for play. The next shot is hit to the green by all players from the chosen ball position. Once to the green, each teammate putts until the ball is holed. From these putts, best score is chosen.
For the second consecutive year, course play was hosted by Lacee Green, Co-Creator of Get Laced Now Fitness in Ventura. Assisting Lacee were Malia Booker, Takiyah Cotton and Tyler Cunningham. Massages were available on hole 11, by Nadia, a masseuse at Heavenly Massage.
A buffet style banquet followed play and was held in a big tent outside the Clubhouse. The awards program followed which included a live auction and raffling of many prizes including three recently published books.
One the featured books included the memoirs of screen and song celebrity star Kathleen Bradley, titled “Backstage at The Price Is Right.” The book highlighted her ten year role, beginning in 1990, as the first African-American model on the popular TV game show. Raffle winners had the honor of getting their books personally autographed on the spot by Ms. Bradley. First time author Rosanna C. Aubert Ivery debuted her book about her life in New Orleans lower ninth ward. Her book is titled “Across the Claiborne Bridge.” Also on hand was author Donald Frye, who presented his book “Changing Guard of American Politics.” Rosanna and Don also signed their books for the winners. Prior to the tee times, prominent artist Emmy Lu, of Beverly Hills, displayed several his paintings in the clubhouse lobby. He donated some of his work that was sold during the auction.
Prizes for the first place were awarded to winning teams based on lowest score of 15 under par, with three eagles along the way. The winning team consisted of players Kathleen Bradley, Cecil woods, Don Cobb and Scottie Wells. Second Place went to the team of Ken Fewer, Rashad Regard, Mike Bennett and Beyer. The third place team was Kirk Davis, Richard Singer, Mark Porter and Fernando Camberos.
No one won the any of prizes for the Hole-In-One contest for the par 3’s. The grand prize was a 2014 Toyota Camry LE provided by DCH Toyota of Oxnard, one of the event’s sponsors. Closest-To-Pin for men was won by Fernando Camberos on Hole 5, and Closest-To-Pin for women was won by Kathleen Bradley on Hole 7. Long Drive for Men was won by Kirk Davis and Long Drive Women was won by Kathleen Bradley – the big winner of the day.
The 17th Annual Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Scholarship Tournament was a great success and was co-sponsored by our 501(c)3 non-profit, Gold Coast Charities, Inc., of Oxnard. Over 55 participants enjoyed the ambience provided by the golfing experience and post award ceremonies. All funds raised went to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Psi Xi Chapter Scholarship Program. Over $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded over the years and this year, six recipients received scholarships. We look forward to another large fundraiser at the same venue in 2015 – hope to see the local community there in attendance.
