Students to explore careers & college at YLS Youth Empowerment Summit

The 6th annual Youth Empowerment Summit hosted by the United Way’s Young Leaders Society will feature a diverse mix of business professionals to share their stories of success with Ventura County youth. The event connects high school and community college students with professionals in the workplace and at local colleges and universities, allowing them to explore opportunities for their future.

The Summit will be held at Oxnard College, 4000 S. Rose Avenue in Oxnard on Friday, May 10 from 8 a.m. -2:30 p.m. An expected 400 Ventura County youth will engage in workshops and career panels by professionals in various industries, including law, education, financial services, technology, and public service. Workshops will focus on applying to college, financial aid, and resume tips. The event will end with a resource fair for students to learn about educational and internship opportunities and community organizations that can help them achieve their goals.

“Each year has seen remarkable growth in student participation and we are proud and honored to host this event at Oxnard College for the fourth year,” said Jessie Hawkins, the Young Leaders Society’s Board Chair.  “We have a fantastic range of career mentors willing to share their knowledge to inform, educate and inspire the next generation of promising young minds.”

Students who participate at the Summit and meet certain eligibility criteria can apply for a scholarship provided by United Way’s Young Leaders Society to further their educational goals. Last year, YLS awarded $10,000 in scholarships. A total of ten local students earned a $1,000 scholarship each. The scholarship fund is made possible by community sponsors. The United Way’s Young Leaders Society hopes to meet or exceed that goal this year.
