VC Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta to Host Run for Your Health 5k
Mark your calendars, lace up your sneakers and get that heart pumping – the 2nd Annual Run For Your Health 5K race, one of Ventura County’s premier runs, is scheduled for May 3, 2014. The Ventura County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (VCAC) in affiliation with the Delta Foundation Research and Educational Foundation and in partnership with As1 Fitness, is excited to bring the race back to the Camarillo Community Center in Camarillo, CA. The 5K Run/Walk event begins at 8 a.m. and the 1K Kids’ Fun Run begins at 9 a.m.
“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 600,000 in America every year. The chapter hosts this Run for Your Health 5K run as our way to encourage healthy lifestyles through activities,” said VCAC President Shanté Morgan-Durisseau.
The race is a fundraiser to support VCAC’s efforts towards making a difference in the community and providing college scholarships to deserving young people in Ventura County. Last year, VCAC awarded several scholarships to recipients who represented high schools from throughout Ventura County. With the cost of attending college continuing to rise, the chapter’s goal is to continue to provide scholarships to deserving students with monies raised from events such as Run For Your Health.
All participants receive a race T-shirt, and are invited to enjoy race day treats such as snacks, complementary massages, and health screenings. In addition, awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners, along with age category winners. All participants under the age of 18 will receive participation recognition.
Registration is available online at www.dstvcac.org. Registration fees are $35/per person. All Fun Run participants are free.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the single largest African-American women’s organization in the country, with more than 200,000 members in 900 chapters in the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Germany, Jamaica, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
VCAC has been serving Ventura County since it was chartered in 1980. The chapter’s programs follow the Sorority’s national Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.
Physical and mental health is one of those thrust. Our past initiatives include programs encouraging healthy lifestyles that affect longevity and mortality and combat obesity. The 5K Run/Walk and 1K Kids’ Fun Run further emphasizes VCAC’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles in the community.
