Ventura County Community Colleges Graduation Rates Increase 100 Percent
VENTURA, Calif.– Moorpark College, Oxnard College and Ventura College awarded a total of 7,475 Associate Degrees and Certificates to deserving students during commencement ceremonies held last week on each of the college campuses. Moorpark College conferred 2,321 degrees (a 25 percent increase with 590 more students earning degrees than last year); at Oxnard College, 1,444 students applied for a degree or certificate, with the number of commencement candidates increasing 10.5 percent compared to last year’s 1,306; and Ventura College reported 3,710 applications for degrees and certificates, a 67 percent increase from last year.
“For more than a century, the three colleges of the Ventura County Community College District have served the educational needs of students and the community. Each college is strategically located, accessible and available to assist anyone who wants to pursue a college education,” stated VCCCD Chancellor Bernard Luskin. “Through ‘open access,’ ‘promise’ and ‘pathways’ programs, the VCCCD continues to be the economic engine for the county, helping students meet their educational goals, while simultaneously fulfilling the workforce needs of the business community,” stated VCCCD Board Chair Bernardo Perez.
The VCCCD is the source through which a diverse group of “prepared and “unprepared” students begin their journey to higher education. It is the only single-district institution within the 113 California Community Colleges. Its three colleges serve the needs of all of the constituents in Ventura County, opening its doors to more than 50,000 students annually. The State of California, Department of Finance projects 47,886 students will graduate from high school in Ventura County from 2017-2021 – an average of 9,500 students per year.
