Oxnard-- The Community Services, Public Safety & Development Committee, Tuesday, November 22, approved the Fire Department annual wellness exams.
The exams are scheduled to take place in January and will reduce the impact on Fire Department operations.
The agreement will not exceed $110,000 annually for three years, with an option to renew for two additional years.
The scope of work is guided by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) under standard 1582, the Gold Standard for Fire Service physical exams.
Fire Chief Alexander Hamilton presented the video and said the Fire Department provides the exams to staff performing high-risk and high-exposure job functions, and contracts for the exams are bid every 3-5 years.
“Medical exams also fulfill other requirements such as respiratory fit testing and Department of Motor Vehicle medical examinations,” he said.
He said the Oxnard Fire Department has been part of the joint labor-management initiative since close to its inception.
“The Wellness Fitness Initiative was a collaboration from the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Firefighters,” Hamilton said. “They were established back in 1997. We’re now up to our fourth edition of the Wellness Fitness Initiative.”
