Frosted Thoughts

Oxnard—Something people may not know about Dialysis patients, on Dialysis day, you need to curtail as much fluid intake as possible.

TO explain, I sit in the chair three hours a day, three days a week, and if you load up on fluids, that means a full bladder and asking your caregiver to unhook you so I can use the restroom.

My Kidney Machine does not have wheels or 100 feet of tubing, so I can get up and use the restroom. I’ve only asked to be unhooked right after my surgery when I had a lot of swelling. I told my substitute, and she said, “You only have 43 minutes left; can’t you hold it’?”

Of course not; that’s just silly. So, once again, I have to adjust and overcome.

During Dialysis, my caregiver will distribute medication, which usually means Vitamin D, and a tiny cup of water to wash it down.

It may not seem like much, but I look forward to that tiny cup of water the most. My mouth by then is dry and uncomfortable, and that tiny amount of water is the best. It may not sound like much, but it’s something that we…
