Oxnard—The Heroes series continues with people who have had a significant impact on my life, all for the better.

JOSEPH Burton Hall. Joe is a fellow Our Holy Redeemer alum, but he was a couple of grades ahead of me. He went to Maria Regina High School and thought my sister was beautiful.

As luck would have it, we ended up two doors apart at the University of Northern Colorado.

When we met, he looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure. I told him my last name, and he asked, “Are you Nanci’s brother?”

Joe was Sigma Chi; I wasn’t, but that didn’t matter to him. We were friends.

We drove to Connecticut to visit one of my crushes, who didn’t work out for me; on the way home, he made me laugh—no easy task.

Then Joe ran out of money, so he moved into my apartment during my Junior year to have a place to sleep.

We became great friends, and our friendship con­tinued after school, all the way until my divorce, when I was broke and being picked on by every employer I ever had.
