Oxnard--It took time and a lot of paperwork, but my continuous glucose meter is working on my body.

THIS little machine gives me real-time updates about my blood sugar and whether I’m going up or down, without stopping to pull out my old glucometer and do a finger stick. The data gets sent to my phone.

As I have said before, the new meter has high and low alarms, and if I get in trouble, high or low, an alarm goes off, warning me to take action. That caused me plenty of past problems, including falling through my writing table on Thanksgiving morning and a hypoglycemic incident less than a month later. My staff called the former newspaper owner Lisa, who kept calling until I answered and encouraged me to eat something until my Blood Sugar came back to normal. That doesn’t count the incredible number of times the J-Train had to bring me back.

It didn’t take long to put the meter to work. My first reading was 110, which is good, but 30 minutes later, it told me that my low Blood Sugar was going to set off the low alarm and I should take action.
