Oxnard—With Veteran’s Day upon us, it makes me think about The Sarge, Sergeant Colin R. Frost, and Good Old Pop, who both proudly served our Country.
POP served in World War II as a Petty Officer in the Navy and fought against Japan. When I was a young man, he didn’t speak much about his time in the service, but he did have a scar on his knee, which he attributed to falling down a ladder.
He did tell us that he developed a bad infection on his injured leg, and when I asked how a fall down a ladder probably didn’t cause such an infection, he’d change the subject. He almost lost his leg, but they saved it.
When I entered College, my roommate, who also served in the Armed Forces, suggested I ask him for his DD 214 to see what happened to him.
That was the last time I asked my father for his service record. “I know there are things that happened to him while he served our Country, including being attacked by someone while he was patrolling the docks. Old Pop told me he had to shoot him or put his life in danger,…
