Community organizations distribute backpacks

Ventura-- Members of the Ventura Downtown Lions Club and Ventura Rotary Club were up early helping children Saturday, August 20, as the groups joined forces to distribute backpacks to kids in need at the Ventura Unified School District (VUSD).

THE groups stuffed hundreds of backpacks with school supplies for the upcoming year and delivered them to the schools.

Steve Shaw from the Ventura Downtown Lions Club said the group has been distributing backpacks to VUSD kids for a long time.

“The Rotary did it at first, and we just took over with them,” he said. “We do it jointly now.”

He said the effort means 621 backpacks being donated to the VUSD.

“We have a vendor, DollarDays (which has the school supplies), and we split the costs equally,” he said. “This cost over $8,000 this year. At this time, with inflation the way it is, it’s a good time to give parents the stuff for kids to go back to school.”
