Oxnard—At approximately 7:22 p.m. on Monday, August 11, the Oxnard Police Department’s Traffic Unit was conducting a distracted driver operation in the area of Vineyard Avenue and Riverpark Boulevard.
OFFICERS conducted a traffic stop on a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup for a vehicle code violation. The driver pulled into a nearby business parking lot.
During the contact, the driver, Diego Penaloza, was agitated and advised officers he had a firearm. Penaloza was telling officers to shoot him. Officers were able to give commands, de-escalate the situation, and take Penaloza into custody without further incident.
The firearm was located in plain view next to Penaloza’s leg. Officers additionally located narcotics and paraphernalia on Penaloza. Penaloza was also found to be a convicted felon.
Penaloza was ultimately charged with firearms and narcotic-related violations.
