Ventura-- The story behind the Board of Supervisors repeal of the Ventura County Campaign Finance Ordinance to follow the State’s framework continues with Supervisor Jeff Gorell saying the specific framework creates a maximum contribution limit and imposes oversights, complaints, investigations, and referrals.
THE split vote brought a large crowd to the meeting, speaking on both sides of the issue.
“It creates an easier portal for constituents to research donations online for all candidates, regardless of what level they are running for,” Gorell said. “It has a dedicated staff to evaluate modifications to the limits required, which is a requirement of Federal Law, and reduces the County’s duplicative efforts, paperwork, staff support, and the confusion it’s created by having a different system.”
He said the framework would continually be modified by the California State Legislature Delegation and presumably supported the California State Legislative Delegation.
“The contribution limits would go up from that limit set in 2003 of $750 up to $5,500,” he said. “There are some positive impacts of higher contribution limits. If you give those contribution limits directly to a candidate versus through a committee, it ensures clear-cut transparency, and voters can hold that candidate accountable for that contribution.”
