Philippine Independence Day Flag raising honored

Oxnard—During its Tuesday, June 2 City Council meeting, Council members declared June 12 as Philippine Independence Day Flag Raising Day in the City.

MAYOR Luis McArthur read the Proclamation and said, “The Philippines declared independence from Spain over 128 years ago after more than 300 years of Spanish Rule.

“The first Filipino Immigrants came to Ventura County in the early 1930s and worked as migrant farm laborers who made historic and significant contributions to agriculture and economic growth of this County, specifically Oxnard,” he said. “The Filipinos in the Military served side-by-side with Americans in World War II, which later paved the way into the U.S. Naval Services in 1947.”

He said countless Filipino American Veterans have continued to serve this great nation during Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq conflicts.

“Several Filipino Americans are also City, County, State, and Federal Employees who play an important and vital role in Civic, Community, and Cultural sectors throughout the Society,” he said. “Many Filipino Americans are recognized as professionals in the medical field, legal professions, educational, and business communities.”
