Supervisors repeal Campaign Finance Ordinance

Ventura--On a split vote Tuesday, March 28, the Board of Supervisors repealed the Ventura County Campaign Finance Ordinance and will follow the State’s framework.

THE framework creates a maximum contribution limit that imposes oversight, complaints, investigations, penalties, and criminal referrals.

The vote, brought forward by Supervisors Jeff Gorell and Janice Parvin, creates “an easier portal for constituents to research donations to all candidates regardless of what level they’re running for. It has a dedicated staff to evaluate modifications to the limits required by Federal Law. It reduces the County’s duplicative efforts, the paperwork, staff support, and confusion created by having a different system.”

The hearing opened with public comments from Abra Stewart, who urged the Supervisors to reject the proposal and listen to the County’s constituents.

“The last time this issue was discussed, many people appeared in person to give comments opposing this action, and many more wrote letters expressing their concerns,” she said. “There were 286 citizens, community leaders, businesses, and organizations across the County who took the time to write you letters of the 286; only two expressed support for the appeal.”
