Tamale Festival attracts hungry crowd

Oxnard— Tamale Lane returned in full force Saturday, December 3, as the Oxnard Tamale Festival brought a hungry crowd glowing from a fun Christmas Parade.

THE Tamales were sweet, savory, and gourmet, prepared by some awardwinning cooks.

The winners in 2022 are J&K Catering (for their pork and chicken tamal, savory), Casa Lopez (strawberry tamal, sweet), and Me Gusta Gourmet Tamales (chicharron tamal, best overall).

Griz Vega from 8 Regions Tamales in Oxnard brought 200 of each type of Tamale to feed the crowd and loves what she does.

“I have Tamales with Jalapeno, Chicken with Molé,” she said. “This year, I prepared a special one with Chocolate bark inside the Tamale. It’s like a dessert. Nobody makes that, so this time somebody has made this for the Tamale Festival.”

She is an award winner and won in 2020 for having the best Tamale.

 

“I love making Tamales,” she said.

Arturo from Casa Lopez in Oxnard said they got started early and we ready to feed the crowds.

“We have Pork, Chicken Cheese, and Strawberry,” he said. “It’s something that we’ve been doing for years, and it’s a pleasure.”
