3-Point Contest builds skills

Port Hueneme—Basket­ball Sharpshooters, with their eyes beyond the 3-point line, came out in force on Saturday, August 3, for the first-ever 3-Point Basketball Competition.

Kids of all ages filled the gym at the Oxnard Boys & Girls Club’s Port Hueneme Unit and cheered each other on, to the delight of their parents, grandparents, and friends.

City of Port Hueneme Recreation Coordinator Taylor Penny said every contestant will get 60 seconds to shoot as many basketballs in the hoop as possible from 5 spots just beyond the 3-point line.

“The last ball at each station is the money ball, so it’s double the points,” she said. “Everyone gets two times, and whoever has the most points wins. We’ll also have a second and third-place winner.”

She said the competition is geared for adults, but a few kids signed up and are ready to show their skills.

“We created a category for the kids,” Penny said. “The competition was a City Council item, based on community member interest.”

 

At the Recreation Department, she said they’re trying to hear what the community wants and create a space for someone of all ages.
