Annual Insect Festival buzzing flying education

Oxnard—The Annual Oxnard Insect Festival buzzed into Plaza Park on Saturday, May 6, and gave residents the opportunity to learn about the role insects play in our world.

THIS year’s event was entitled “Everything Bees.”

The event was brought forward by the Cultural and Community Services Department and featured a butterfly tent, Family Time, lots of education for kids of all ages, plenty of “interesting food,” full of protein.

Julie Clark of the University of California Cooperative Extension of Ventura County said their exhibit has three sections.

“We have the Master Gardeners here and they are talking about beneficial and pest insects,” she said. “We have our new Agricultural Educator and research farm in Camarillo, and today, we’re focused on projects for children.”

She also brought microscopes and insect games she developed.

Julie is based in the Ventura County Office, but she also works regionally for the University of California.

 

“My focus is emerging tree pests,” she said. “These are pests already in Ventura County, or we anticipate they’ll eventually be here, like Asian Citrus Psyllid. It’s in backyard citrus in the County. We haven’t found it in commercial, but there is a quarantine for citrus growers because of…
