Anti-smoking ordinance being examined in PH

Port Hueneme—During its Monday, July 1 meeting, the City Council heard survey data about prohibiting smoking in multi-unit residential dwellings and instructed City Staff to give them options to move forward before drafting an ordinance.

Deputy City Manager Charles Peretz presented the item and said the Council requested they survey property managers and owners about potentially imposing smoking regulations in multi-unit residential buildings.

The Council received public comments advocating smoking prohibitions within multi-unit residential buildings on November 20, 2023, and on December 4, the City Council directed the Staff to conduct outreach with owners and managers of multi-unit buildings, and they circulated the survey in March.

“More than five dozen commercial properties were contacted, and 31 points of contact were established,” he said. “The City ended up receiving 13 responses.”

He said the results revealed that property managers and owners don’t receive many smoking-related complaints.

“Seven respondents said they’ve never had a complaint, while five indicated a frequency of less than once a month,” he said. “Only one property manager indicated he received 1-4 complaints per month.”

Peretz noted that 10 of the 13 respondents currently have a smoking policy in place.
