Banana Festival celebrates diversity

Port Hueneme—Area residents went “Bananas” for the 11th Annual Port of Hueneme Banana Festival on Saturday, September 28, celebrating a diverse, working, carbon-neutral Port.

THE free event featured plenty of music, food, entertainers, vendors, arts and crafts, kid activities, and plenty of free Bananas for the large, appreciative crowd.

The colossal event cele­brates a diverse working Port and the community’s amazing contribution as it works toward becoming a Carbon-Free Port, focusing on one of its primary imports, Bananas.

Port of Hueneme Public, Labor, and Community Relations Manager Miguel Rodriguez said the Banana Festival’s size and capacity has grown over 11 years.

“You’re going to see a very diverse population,” he said. “We have our top three Banana suppliers for the West Coast, which makes us the number one Banana Port, and we supply Bananas for 15 states.”

 

He said the Banana Festival is also a resource fair.

“We have a goal and blueprint to become the first de-carbonized Port by 2030 and be the first de-carbonized Port in the Country, if not the world,” he said. “We are the first Por t in California to be certified Green Marine, an international certification, and we were also voted the Greenest…
