Bike and Ped improvements emphasize education

Oxnard--The City Council received an update on its bicycle and pedestrian path improvements during its Tuesday, December 19 meeting.

Public Works Director Michael Wolfe presented the update and said the City of Oxnard uses multiple engineering and education programs and infrastructure.

“When we do that from a public works perspective, we look at the engineering component of that, and we can do this as a program, like safe routes to school, and we can do this as a stand-alone project so we can look at it as a new bike lane or trail,” he said. “We do this by integrating into existing Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), so if you think we’re doing a paving project, we may be doing a bike lane.”

He said the in-house staff does signs and striping rather than it being done through a larger project or operational improvements are done by traffic signal technicians.

“Our roadway designs were built in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, so modern roadways in that terminology mean in that timeframe,” he said. “When those streets were built, those streets were built around vehicles. It was all about getting the flow of vehicles or the volume of vehicles through the…
