Bone Builders find balance

Oxnard—There’s a new group at the Wilson Senior Center, as the Bone Builders use weights and togetherness to fight osteoporosis. They also enjoy card games, Loteria, lunch, puzzles, Wii Bowling, and informational events.

THE group uses weights to build resistance while discussing everything, like food and politics, and laughs the day away.

Leader Grace Nishihara helps the group get together to keep their bones strong.

“We also have balance exercises,” she said. “I’ve been doing this for about 15 years. My father was looking for an exercise class, and I liked it, so I started it myself. It’s a good Senior Citizen exercise.”

“After about nine months, Nishihara said this is it. This is for ages 55 and up.”

The group meets for lunch occasionally and enjoys hanging out together.

She said it’s extremely important that older people exercise and hang together.

 

“It keeps you going vertical, and you feel better about yourself,” she said. “We support is supportive.”

Karyl McLaughlin started bone builders before COVID.

“I have active osteoporosis,” she said. “You start with nothing, add weights, and increase the poundage as you get stronger.

“I started with two pounds, but I haven’t quickly advanced,” she said.
