Bubbling Springs Park permitting underway in Port Hueneme

Port Hueneme-- The City Council, Tuesday, January 18, received an update about Bubbling Springs Park.

Public Works Director Donald Villafana introduced the item to the council, and he said the Bubbling Springs permitting process will remove the reeds and vegetation from the water.

“It’s a long and involved process,” he said. “We’ve hired a very knowledgeable environmental consulting firm, Rincon Consultants, and they’ve been doing a good job.”

Senior Biologist Eric Schaad presented the item for Rincon and said Bubbling Springs Park is a valuable resource.

“The project we were tasked with is to support the city in obtaining permits and a CEQA environmental review for the periodic removal of the vegetation overgrowth, primarily cattails, and bulrushes from within the Bubbling Springs Natural Channel,” he said. “The primary activity will be the removal of this vegetation. It will be mostly mechanized, but there will also be hand equipment, including smaller backhoes. It’s a clean, simple scoop activity from the backside station equipment, pulling vegetation out of the channel and depositing it to be disposed of at another facility.”

He said the channel is choked out with a rush of cattail reed plants.
