Budget preview prepares for Measure O sunset

Oxnard-- The Finance and Governance Committee, Tuesday, April 10, received a preview of the city’s 2022-2023 budget.

The city faced a $9.2 million structural deficit during the fiscal year 2019-2020 but worked through the debt while dealing with the effects of a global pandemic.

The voters did approve Measure E, which helped the city financially as it continues to climb its way out of the deficit.

The proposed budget includes $32 million in needs from the city departments for restoration and improvements. These will add between $10-12 million to the budget.

The proposed budget included about $8 million in 2021-2022 for the police, and in 2022-2023, they propose to add $925,000 to focus on recruitment and hiring. The city added $5.886 million to the fire department in 2021- 2022 and has added just over $2 million in new revenue to increase staffing to improve services for the city, and replace older vehicles.

The city added $10.3 mil­lion to public works in 2021-2022 and plans to add $2.383 million to continue working on parks, medians, landscaping, tree trimming, litter removal, groundskeeping, and maintenance services.
