Cannabis revenue may shrink in Port Hueneme

Port Hueneme-- During a special city council meeting Monday, April 25, the group updated the public about the economic benefit of changing Port Hueneme’s name to Hueneme Beach.

Port Hueneme’s name has been in flux for many years; in late 2019 and early 2020, the council engaged an experienced strategic planning company.

Through different engagement instruments, surveys, and focus groups, economic vitality, stability, and prosperity themes emerged.

“That was to explore what was, from a larger degree, a rebranding, including the value of changing the name of the city, specific to attract economic investment, and developers, as well as tourism,” City Manager Brad Conners said. “The next phase of that initiative after the strategic plan was approved.”

He said the council asked for and the staff provided some research about doing that and understanding the costs.

“In July this past year, those details were provided to the public and the council, and the council authorized the staff to begin the process of a potential ballot measure in November to actually vote on a city name change,” he said.
