Chanukkiah Festival spreads light over evil

Ventura—The holy days of Chanukkiah wrapped up over the weekend, and on Sunday, December 21, the Chabad of Ventura family celebrated its sense of togetherness.

THE celebration included dancing, a juggler, who engaged the audience, plenty of donuts, some history and much love across Ventura Harbor Village.

Ventura Chabad Rabbi Yakov Latowic led the celebration, which started when he arrived in Ventura in the summer of 1987.

Our first Chanukkiah here began at the end of 1987,” he said. “We started at the Pacific View Mall, and we were there last Thursday night.”

They’ve expanded the Chanukkiah Celebration over the last couple of years, and he said on the first night they started with Light Up Ventura Chanukkiah Concert.

“We blocked the street at California Lane and there were tons of people,” he said. “There were donuts, music, dancing festivities, and the concert.

He said the night was poignant, because earlier that same night, in Australia, my homeland, and he lived for a year in Bondi Beach, and I know a lot of the people who were victims of the hateful terrorist attack.
