Cooling Centers offer heat relief

Oxnard-- The City of Oxnard took action to mitigate the National Weather Service’s excessive heat warning for coastal areas of Ventura County over Labor Day weekend and opened the Wilson Senior Center and South Oxnard Center as cooling centers from the heat.

Area residents stopped by the Wilson Senior Center Sunday, September 4, to enjoy the cool temperature and a movie.

Wilson Senior Center Director Jessica Serrano hosted the event at Wilson and said the area is experiencing a heat wave and wanted to offer relief.

“We actually went for the heat with the last movie and just finished watching McFarland USA,” she said. “A few members of the public have come in here, and we don’t realize how hot it is outside because we’ve been here for a while. One of our Supervisors asked me if I could work today, and that’s how I got chosen.”

The City of Oxnard saw the warning Friday, September 2, shared the information across social media, and Jessica loves stepping up and helping the Seniors.

“I assume if there is another heatwave, something like this will be made available in the future,” she said.
