Council declares severe storm emergency

Oxnard-- The City Council approved a severe storm emergency proclamation during its Tuesday, January 2, meeting.

City Attorney Stephen Fischer said they added the item to the agenda following the Thursday, December 21 storm, which inundated the City with an unprecedented amount of rainfall in a short period of time.

“The City Manager, in his role as the Director of Emergency Services, signed a resolution proclaiming the existence of a local emergency,” he said. “The Council, now, has to ratify that, or if it chooses not to, it will expire. This (resolution) will enable the City to seek State and Federal aid regarding the damage that was done to the community through the storm.”

Mayor John Zaragoza thanked the City’s Management, Firefighters, Police Officers, Public Works, and everyone who came together and helped during the storm.

“We had 60+ inches of rain here in Oxnard, which is unprecedented,” he said. “You know, I just want to thank all the workers from the City of Oxnard that really helped, not only what happened in Port Hueneme and the surrounding neighborhoods, but potentially, we’re looking at potentially helping our residents who have flood damage and automobile damage.”
